Acids
In the previous slide, we defined an acid as a substance that donates H+ ions, but what does that mean exactly?

Let's look at a common acid, hydrochloric acid (HCl), to better explain this definition.  In every molecule of hydrochloric acid, there is one hydrogen atom and one chlorine atom, as shown below.

When HCl is mixed with another substance, such as water, the HCl donates H+ ions to the water molecules.
